As we look at post‑pandemic ELA and mathematics performance across the country, it is clear that our current systems are not meeting the diverse and complex needs of today’s learners. Instructional and curriculum leaders are navigating unprecedented challenges: increasing numbers of students with multifaceted needs, limited staffing and resources, and an urgent responsibility to accelerate learning—especially for our most vulnerable populations. In this moment, we need new focus, new tools, and new solutions that help us respond with precision and scale.

At the same time, educators are hearing the term AI everywhere, often in ways that are vague or misleading. We have begun labeling any technology integration as “AI,” while simultaneously speaking about AI as though it is a mysterious force poised to replace educators. Just as we introduce new vocabulary to students with clarity and accuracy, we must define what AI is—and what it is not in order to evaluate the tools that promise us dramatic results.

AI is not creative in the human sense; it recombines patterns from data rather than generating ideas from lived experience. Better outcomes result from structured input.  Increased intention has been placed on prompt engineering.  Better input results in better output.

AI is not a replacement for expertise. It can augment our work, but it cannot replicate professional wisdom, ethics, or instructional discernment, and educators must still verify accuracy and relevance.
